A second smaller barge has arrived on the Gold Coast to assist in constructing the light rail vehicle (LRV) bridge over the Nerang River.

The barge has been positioned on the western side of the Gold Coast Bridge adjacent to the larger piling barge ‘Leanora’.

CEO Phil Mumford asked boaties to be aware of minor changes to the channel alignment and navigate to the changed conditions.

“The Leanora will lift pre-cast bridge girders as it has the larger crane and also holds the piling rig,” Mr Mumford said.

“The new barge, MDT121, has a 135 ton crane which will assist with lifting, ferrying material and constructing headstocks.

“Leanora will move about every two weeks as the barges move from one pier to the next and the smaller barge will move position a number of times in coming months, with water police in attendance for major movements.”

Navigation under the Gold Coast Bridge will be maintained with both barges in place.

Mr Mumford said boaties were asked to be aware these large vessels were in the Nerang River and should check the GoldLinQ and Marine Safety Queensland websites for updates on their movements.
